Perhentian Eco Education Project by Fuze Ecoteer
PEEP empowers Terengganu's youth (ages 7-17) to protect marine ecosystems through eco-education and hands-on activities like coral monitoring and upcycling plastics. Operating since 2012, PEEP conducts after-school sessions five days a week, March-October, at the Perhentian Islands Marine Park. With plans to expand to mainland schools, PEEP focuses on marine conservation and waste management using data-driven results.
1. Conduct interactive weekly eco-club classes for children between 7 to 12 years old, including English classes and citizen science activities such as the Kayak Patrol, Coral Watch and Precious Plastic sessions.
2. Train up to 3 students for the Junior Open Water Diver Course, who will be inducted automatically to the Rapid Response Team or Anak Pulau under Perhentian Marine Research Station when they turn 18 years old, to support marine conservation activities such as ghost net removal, survey dives, underwater cleanup dives and more.
3. Conduct interactive online/physical education in schools for secondary and University students in Terengganu, specifically on topics covering marine conservation and biodiversity, with opportunities for selected students to apply for the eco-action volunteering program conducted at Perhentian Island.
4. Support youth-led eco-actions on the island focused on tourist waste reduction with stakeholders. Throughout the volunteering week, the group will be given a different type of tourism player to be consulted with, to observe and investigate the issues of waste management within the businesses and to produce a SWOT analysis. The members of Perhentian Eco Education Club will use this guideline to produce and execute a waste reduction campaign.

Dive Into Eco-Education with FuzeEcoteer and their Perhentian Eco-Education Project!
FuzeEcoteer with YELL’s support hosted 8 weekly classes designed to spark curiosity and promote environmental stewardship among young learners aged 7–12. These classes total 12 hours a week, including dynamic 1-hour academic lessons and hands-on 2-hour citizen science sessions. From April to June 2024, a whopping 88 hours of learning were conducted, engaging 43 students (23 boys and 21 girls). Here’s what’s happening at PEEP:
Weekly Classes
- Junior Eco Class: Explore living and non-living things, human body parts, coral introductions, and fun experiments on acids and alkalines.
- Senior Eco Class: Dive deeper into coral reefs, shorelines, waves, currents, and microorganisms.
- English Class: Master topics like simple greetings, sports, hobbies, ambitions, and celebrations.
- WWF Eco School: Work through 7 steps to achieve the Green Flag Award, following WWF’s environmental action plans. Learn more here.
Citizen Science in Action
- Upcycling: Students collect, clean, and sort straws from vendors before shredding them into pieces to create upcycled merchandise.
- Coral Watch: Throughout the year, students monitor coral health to track bleaching events and assess ecosystem vitality.
- Kayak Patrol: Students paddle around village beaches to pick up floating debris, promoting an anti-littering culture while protecting marine life.

Furthermore, exceptional students who actively participated, maintain excellent attendance, and exhibited good behaviour were selected as Junior Diver Candidates. In 2024, three outstanding young divers Airil Putra bin Alimin (13) Nur Amirah Maisara bt Mohd Eruwan (13) and Siti Nur Selasih bt Abdullah (13) earned their Junior Open Water Diving licenses!
As part of PEEP’s whole of community approach, PEEP conducted 6 Marine Conservation workshops in schools across Terengganu, reaching an impressive 1,889 students (799 boys, 1,090 girls). These 2-3 hour sessions focused on:
- Marine conservation
- Coral reef and turtle protection
- Marine parks
- Waste management

Fuze Ecoteer is on a mission to inspire the next generation of eco-warriors and marine conservationists. Stay tuned for more impactful programs and workshops!

Perhentian Eco Education Project (PEEP) is one of the conservation projects established by Fuze Ecoteer and officially started in 2012. PEEP primarily aimed to spread environmental awareness focusing on the younger generations of Perhentian Island as well as villagers and tourists. PEEP is essential for encouraging the younger generation to get involved in marine conservation through eco-classes and citizen science classes. Eco-education provides opportunities for them to understand and engage in environmental issues around them, acquire problem-solving skills, and ultimately be future powerful environmental advocates.
