Fostering Human-Monkey Coexistence through community services and environmental education by Langur Project Penang
Langur Project Penang (LPP) is a primate conservation enterprise in Penang, Malaysia, aiming to promote coexistence among humans and urban wildlife through community science and environmental education.
In Penang, it’s not uncommon to see dusky langurs or long-tailed macaques weaving through traffic, raiding rubbish bins, or staring back from rooftops. These everyday encounters are a symptom of a deeper issue: as cities expand, the line between human and monkey habitats blurs. Habitat fragmentation, roadkill incidents, food provisioning by humans, and poor waste management have all intensified human-monkey conflict that put both wildlife and people at risk.
Langur Project Penang (LPP) hopes to address these challenges through a unique blend of citizen science, conservation innovation, and environmental education. From installing Malaysia’s first arboreal canopy bridge to empowering Malaysians to become citizen scientists for urban monkey conservation through focused monitoring and community engagement, LPP has pioneered grassroots solutions to urban-wildlife conflict. Educational workshops in schools and forests, as well as community ethnographic research and infrastructure proposals are also being propelled to create a city where humans and monkeys can safely and respectfully coexist.
Ah Lai's Crossing is LPP's first road canopy bridge located in Teluk Bahang, Penang, aiding more than 6000 road crossings of a total of 9 wildlife species up to this day.
With the support of YELL 2024 Seed Grant, LPP plans to expand its ongoing efforts by by empowering Penang residents—especially youth, families, and underserved communities—to take part in monkey conservation through:
- Collect behavioural data and collaborate with community in both dusky langurs and long-tailed macaques’ sites
- Install the second Canopy Bridge and continue camera trap monitoring
- Engage local communities and increase environmental education
- Organise team-building and capacity-training programme
