Promoting Community-Based Conservation of the Sunda Pangolin and Other Wildlife in Batang Padang, Perak by Universiti Putra Malaysia

Despite being home to the largest Semai Orang Asli population in Malaysia, Batang Padang in Perak is facing an alarming decline in its Sunda Pangolin population due to illegal poaching, driven by high black-market prices. The loss of this critically endangered species not only disrupts forest ecosystems, but also jeopardizes the Semai people’s livelihood, which depends on forest resources like bamboo, rattan, and durian. In response, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), in collaboration with the Aborigine Welfare Society of Batang Padang (PEROABP), aims  to promote a community-driven conservation initiative to train and empower Semai youth and leaders. The project aims to reduce poaching, preserve biodiversity, and pass down traditional ecological knowledge, which in the long run would ensure the future of both the pangolins and the Semai way of life.

With the YELL 2024 Seed Grant, the project will scale conservation efforts across more communities and schools by:
  • Establishing a new PEROABP Youth Conservation Unit, called Youth of Jol
  • Expanding training for youth and local leaders on Sunda Pangolin and wildlife conservation
  • Implementing school-based lessons and a wildlife conservation camp at SK Batu 14
  • Conducting field monitoring patrols to document threats in Batang Padang forests
