Seeds of Change: Children and Youth in Forest Conservation and Environmental Education at Upper Baram by Worming Up
Hands-on learning during the Train-the-Trainer session with PALS Club teachers at SK Long Anap.
In the heart of Upper Baram, Sarawak, children grow up surrounded by dense forests, rivers, and rare wildlife—yet many have never learned the names of the species around them or why their forests are worth protecting. Cut off by hours of off-road travel, limited infrastructure, and a school curriculum with little focus on the environment, these young people are slowly disconnected from the land that holds invaluable values and importance.

WormingUp aims to reconnect children and youth in Upper Baram with their natural heritage through hands-on forest conservation and environmental education called ‘Seeds of Change’. The project will bring sustainability-focused learning to four rural schools, covering topics like waste management, biodiversity, jungle patrols, and eco-tourism. Youth volunteers will guide younger students in eco-actions, and local teachers will be trained to carry the work forward using a customized module.
With support from the YELL 2024 Seed Grant, WormingUp will be able to empower young people to stay, protect, and thrive in their own communities through:
- Initiate and conduct environmental education sessions for all students in the 4 schools in Upper Baram
- Provide training including waste management (including prevention, recycling, and upcycling), biodiversity exploration in the jungle, community-led jungle patrol routines, tree planting and agroforestry practices, and attending eco-tourism awareness sessions
- Engage youth volunteers in a buddy system to lead eco-actions with the children from the 4 schools
- Develop teaching module and train teacher volunteers from 4 schools about local eco-education
