Youth Climate Adaptation Forum 2024

The Youth Climate Adaptation Forum (YCAF) represents the latest chapter in UNICEF’s 70-year legacy of standing up for children’s rights in Malaysia. Together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, GIZ, and young people, UNICEF is determined to confront the urgent and pressing challenge of climate change. This forum aims to mobilize young people to take meaningful action against climate change, ensuring their voices are heard and their futures safeguarded.

The forum included a mix of plenary sessions, panel discussions, marketplace sessions, and networking opportunities. The forum focused on:
  1. Sustainable Cities (Urban Resilience, Green Infrastructure, Water Management): Strategies for sustainable city planning and green infrastructure to tackle urban heat and extreme weather. Engaging youth in community-based resilience initiatives within urban settings.
  2. Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Restoration: Projects focused on restoring ecosystems, conserving wildlife, and integrating traditional knowledge. Youth-led projects for ecosystem restoration, reforestation, and wildlife conservation.
  3. Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security: Innovations in farming practices to enhance food security while adapting to climate challenges. Empowering youth in sustainable agriculture through innovation and technology.
  4. Climate Justice, Awareness, and Education: Advocacy for equitable solutions to climate impacts and amplifying marginalized voices. Youth-led initiatives in conservation and resilience planning. Integrating climate education in schools and building youth leadership in climate action through advocacy, communication, and project management. Fostering partnerships between educational institutions, NGOs, and government agencies to enhance climate literacy.
     

Marketplace: AdapTales/Kisah Adaptasi

Curated by the Youth Environment Living Labs (YELL) team, the marketplace featured a collection of youth-led organisations/projects sharing their innovative journeys toward climate resilience. Participants engaged with these groups through an immersive experience that utilized photo prompts and storytelling, allowing them to explore the narratives behind youth-led climate action.

The organisations and projects in the marketplace include: The aim was to highlight the importance of youth leadership in addressing climate challenges and to foster discussions around collective, grassroots solutions for a resilient future.
 

In the forum, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability of Malaysia (NRES), Yang Berhormat Nik Nazmi mentioned in his speech that NRES’ goal is to allow more initiatives like the Youth Environment Living Labs (YELL) to flourish, in support of youth action in climate and environmental-related issues in Malaysia.
 

 
At the conclusion of the forum, a survey revealed interesting insights into participants’ views on climate change. The results showed that a significant majority perceive climate change as a crisis, with many thinking about it nearly every day. Among their priorities for Malaysia, participants emphasised the need for green urban planning and improved waste management practices. Additionally, the survey highlighted that most participants rely on social media as a key tool for discussing climate change with those around them.
