Food for thought

What happens to food waste? To the landfills, which causes the food to produce methane gas through anaerobic respiration. This is terrible since 53% of food is wasted at the hands of the consumer. To help you visualize, that’s 115 kg of food per person every year. With 32.37 million of Malaysia’s population, it’s like 16 KLCCs, each rising 451.9 metres tall stuffed to the brim with food waste. If we don't address the problem of food waste, this could become a reality.

I am hopeful that people will begin composting their food. All it takes is 5 minutes to dig a hole and toss in all your food wastes.

In every essay on strengthening bonds among Malaysians, there is always gotong-royong. I sincerely believe that if we can reach a wider audience, everyone will be writing about composting food waste together with their neighbours in their backyard. Consider how much methane gas we can hinder from spreading. Stop throwing and get involved in composting! Bak kata, "Sesal dahulu pendapatan, sesal kemudian tidak berguna.”*

*Malay proverb; similar to "No use crying over spilled milk".
