A Day in the Life of a Weaver - Jenny James

For Siti Norbani, weaving is more than just a skill; it is a journey shaped by patience, resilience, and quiet determination.

She first began learning how to weave in 2012, the same year she started working with Tanoti. What began as something completely new soon became a meaningful part of her life. Guided by senior artisans, she learned step by step, transforming from someone with no experience into a skilled weaver through years of dedication and practice.

Siti Norbani carefully performs the menganing process, preparing the warp threads on the warping frame, an essential step that forms the foundation of every woven piece. This meticulous stage ensures precision, alignment, and strength, reflecting the skill and patience required before the weaving journey truly begins.

Her day begins simply. Around 7 a.m., she wakes up, prepares herself, and has breakfast before starting work. Once she sits at her loom, the outside world seems to disappear, replaced by the steady rhythm of threads being woven together. On most days, she spends about seven hours weaving. However, when there are special projects or urgent deadlines, she continues her work into the night, showing her strong commitment to her craft.

Weaving is not without its challenges. Among all the techniques she has learned, she finds Songket Sarawak the most difficult. The weaving method is different and more complex compared to techniques from places like Terengganu. It requires a high level of focus, precision, and patience, making it one of the most demanding parts of her work.

Siti Norbani focuses on her weaving, carefully working each thread to create the textile.

There have been times when she felt like giving up. The long hours, the physical strain, and the pressure can be overwhelming. Yet, she continues to persevere. The encouragement and support from her fellow artisans have played an important role in keeping her motivated. Their shared experiences and mutual understanding create a strong sense of community that helps her push through difficult moments.

And then comes the most rewarding part.

When she completes a piece, she feels an overwhelming sense of relief, followed by happiness. Each finished work represents her effort, her struggles, and her growth. It is something she takes great pride in proof of her journey as a weaver.

For Siti Norbani, weaving is also about preserving tradition. She believes it is important to continue this craft so that it does not fade away with time. She hopes that younger generations will develop an interest in handmade products and learn to appreciate the intricate process behind each piece.

Because for her, weaving is not just about producing fabric.

It is about preserving culture, building resilience, and telling a story one thread at a time.
