Championing Environmental Awareness Through Education

Ung Jun Min has been working as a research officer at the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) since 2023. She graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with a degree in Environmental Biology. She has a strong focus on critical environmental issues such as plastic pollution, climate change, and energy efficiency. Ung dedicates her work to promoting sustainable solutions and raising public awareness of pressing ecological challenges, driven by the belief that a clean and safe environment is essential to human well-being.

“To me, environmental work is a meaningful and important way to protect our planet and future generations. It is more than just conserving nature; it is about ensuring that everyone has access to clean air, water, and a safe environment. I believe that my efforts can create real change, especially through awareness and education,” said Ung Jun Min.

Reducing Energy Waste at the Grassroots Level

Ung Jun Min participated in the Consumers' Association of Penang's (CAP) Energy Saving and Efficiency Project, which was launched in response to growing concerns about rising energy consumption and its environmental consequences. Given the importance of energy efficiency in reducing climate change, the project's main goal was to involve school communities as an opportunity for significant change. It started with a simple but effective concept, teaching teachers and students about practical energy-saving techniques and tracking the schools' electricity consumption to evaluate the project's effectiveness.

In Malaysia, electricity is still largely generated from fossil fuels, leading to significant air and water pollution as well as greenhouse gas emissions. Ung Jun Min and the team recognized the urgent need to promote behavioral change at the grassroots level, starting with students, who are often more receptive to adopting new habits and can serve as catalysts for change within their families. They believe that education is essential for achieving lasting, long-term environmental impact.

“I joined the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) in 2023 because I have always been interested in protecting the environment, especially fighting climate change. When I heard about this project, I felt it was a good way to raise awareness and help people take simple actions to save energy. Thus, I decided to join the project because I believe education is the first step to real change. I thought it was a simple yet powerful initiative. Changing behavior might seem small, but when multiplied across hundreds or thousands of students, the impact can be substantial. I saw the potential this project had to create long-term habits and effective results.”, by Jun Min.

Personal Growth and Hopes for the Future

Ung Jun Min has become increasingly conscious of her own energy consumption. “Yes, definitely. I have become more conscious about my own energy use. At home, I make sure to unplug appliances that are not in use to avoid electricity wastage. My family also invested in energy-efficient appliances like a 5-star rated washing machine and refrigerator, and we noticed a clear drop in our electricity bill”, Jun Min stated.

Similarly, in the office, energy-saving practices are actively encouraged. Devices are unplugged when idle, air conditioning is minimized during the cooler mornings in favor of fans and natural ventilation through open windows, and natural sunlight is utilized whenever possible to reduce reliance on artificial lighting. These simple yet effective habits contribute significantly to lowering energy consumption both at home and in the workplace.

Ung Jun Min has learned that meaningful change requires time and persistent effort, but with dedication, positive results will follow. She emphasizes the importance of teamwork and community involvement in driving environmental progress. Looking ahead, she hopes the project will expand to more schools throughout Malaysia and be integrated into the standard environmental education curriculum.

Practical Solutions and Early Successes

There has been a noticeable increase in awareness and proactive behavior among both students and teachers. In a similar project conducted last year, nearly ten schools participated, with four successfully achieving a measurable reduction in electricity usage. Students have begun adopting simple habits such as turning off lights and fans when not in use, demonstrating that even small actions can contribute to meaningful environmental outcomes.

Some schools did not achieve reductions in electricity usage due to external factors such as ongoing construction or extreme heat, which necessitated increased use of air conditioning. The project tackles the issue of energy overconsumption and its direct connection to climate change and environmental pollution.

Following the implementation of the project, one school teacher shared that students began actively reminding educators to switch off unused lights, air conditioners, and smart boards. It was a heartening reflection of how students had embraced their roles as “energy monitors,” taking the lead in promoting responsible energy use. Their proactive behavior not only demonstrated growing environmental awareness but also positively influenced the teachers, helping them cultivate more mindful energy habits in their daily routines.

Conclusion

She encourages individuals to start with simple, consistent actions such as turning off fans and lights, which, when practiced daily, can collectively lead to substantial change. Ung urges people not to underestimate their own potential, advising young individuals to adopt energy-saving habits at home and actively support environmental education initiatives. For those seeking to make a greater difference, volunteering with local environmental organizations is a valuable way to contribute to a larger-scale impact.

In conclusion, Ung Jun Min’s journey with the Consumers’ Association of Penang reflects the transformative power of grassroots initiatives in fostering environmental consciousness. Through education, active participation, and simple yet effective energy-saving practices, the Energy Saving and Efficiency Project has begun to instill lasting behavioral changes in schools and communities.
