To be eco-friendly, to live a sustainable, biodynamic lifestyle, is the ideal that comes with a price tag many young people can't afford, even though it should always be affordable. Many of us want to live sustainably, but as students or young working adults, that ideal sometimes feels out of reach. Still, it’s worth asking: what does it really mean to “consume with a purpose” when the sustainable consumption ideal feels financially unsustainable and what can communities like Kongsi Coop teach us about it?

What is Kongsi Coop?
Let's begin from the top ; Kongsi Coop ,formally Koperasi Kongsi Selangor Berhad , is a consumer cooperative built around shared values of connecting people, soil and nature. You may have heard of us through events like the Klang River Festival, Slow Market at Just Life, Ted-X Petaling Street, or our Farmer’s Market at G.K Organic farm.

In essence, a consumer cooperative is a community that works together to meet common economic, social, and cultural needs. For us, these people would be organic and biodynamic (or in transition) farmers, artisans, producers and consumers who share the same goals. Kongsi’s vision is “to be the model consumer cooperative that advocates harmonious ecosystems for people, soil, and nature” after all, and what better way to do so through community connection. Our mission revolves around being the platform that supports local farmers and producers, a place to connect people with resources, and promoting organic, biodynamic, and Earth-friendly living, balancing culture, rights and economics.

How Kongsi Lives Its Values
Kongsi’s values can be summed up as: Co-Creating, Connecting , Cycling and Culture.

To Co-create what we can based on who and what we have. To be the place and community that connects people and resources. To cycle resources back to society, or to simply put it ; returning what we gain back to society , and to uphold a culture that leaves behind a harmonious ecosystem for future generations. Everything we do reflects these values — from food programs to educational workshops.

Let's look at the Food Bag subscription program. Co-owners, community members can subscribe to receive weekly varieties of organic vegetables and protein of the week, directly supporting small local organic farmers and artisans through consistent demand. Each delivery also shares stories about the farms themselves, building connection and understanding between the food consumer and the food producers.

One of our other activities in advocacy would be Kongsi Academy. Under Kongsi Academy , educators and trainers can run workshops ranging from sustainable living and self-development,from tempeh and sourdough making to childcare and home making. These sessions help people understand not only how to live sustainably by providing for themselves, but also how to reconnect with what they consume.

Then there’s the Kongsi Pop-Up Café, a weekend feature that rotates local food artisans. One week it might be pizza and nasi lemak from Doodledough, the next, a guest collaborator's  specialty dish. Every weekly, even daily menu could change, be it rotation or experimentation, but the idea stays the same: food as a way to build community and you will always be fed at Kongsi Coop.

All of this happens at Kongsi House by the River, a repurposed kampung house along Old Klang Road. It serves as a shared space for cooking, organic product sales, our community garden, a community event space and working space for the working team and co-owners alike, who are always welcome to visit when the premises are open.

Currently, Kongsi is running Fund A Land with Kongsi, a project that helps organic farmers secure long-term access to farmland through a community land trust. It’s a response to a real issue: many small farmers rent land that can be sold off or repurposed any time, and that brings extra hardship through rent concerns and costs for said farmers, who in truth, should never worry about these things whilst growing crops. Fund A Land seeks to protect farmland so that farmers would not have to worry as much, and their lands remain as organic farmland for future generations, no matter who the next owner could be, as the land trust fund turns the lands into community supported farmlands, in the hopes of establishing a strong Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) movement.

What It Means for Us — The Youth
Unfortunately, without extra financial backing or shared costs of living, supporting the cause of sustainable, environmentally friendly living, feels like a pipe dream. Organic biodynamic goods, local small artisan craft made with passion, and sustainable produce can feel out of reach for young people who are still studying or starting out in their careers. That reality can make sustainability feel like a privilege for the privileged, for they are the ones who can afford it.

Fret not, “consuming with purpose” doesn’t always have to start with money. It starts with awareness of the things we consume. Even if we can’t afford to live fully sustainable, environmentally friendly lives right now, we can always learn, ask questions, and begin understanding the systems behind what we eat and use. We can start by supporting local farmers at markets, reducing waste, or simply staying curious about where our food and materials come from.

Kongsi Coop shows us that sustainability isn’t just a solo purchase, it’s a lifestyle built on connection. It’s a community effort that grows over time, and while we might not be full participants today, we are the future consumers, collaborators, and co-owners of movements like theirs.

Sowing Seeds for the Future
This short article isn’t a deep dive, but rather a glance into how Kongsi Coop brings people together through sustainable living and community. For those of us who care about the environment and the wish for change feels just out of reach , always remember that advocacy starts with thought and awareness, no matter how small it is, it's always better late to know than never knowing at all.

We might not have the means to consume consciously yet, but we can choose to care, learn, and prepare for the day we can. When that time comes, we’ll know exactly where to go and who to work with.

Still curious ? Check out our website at Kongsi Co-op and look out for our next Green Carpet session, if you are truly curious about the first hand experience, and consider joining the community as a co-owner.

Thank you, Isabel Yap Quan-E for sharing your experience at Kongsi Co-op!
